CBC News took many kinds of face masks on sale to the Toronto University’s Dalla Lana School for Public Health to test.
The masks that performed the worst were those made of bandanas, and single-layer gaiters. They had fabrics that were thin, making them useless for stopping particles from exiting. Also doing poorly were the valve masks, which are a craze. Exhalation valves are like small holes inside masks that render masks unprotective. Health Canada issued warnings regarding valve masks. However, they are able to still be purchased from Canada.
The masks that did best were the medical N95 masks but they were expensive and uncomfortable. An alternative that is comfortable and comfortable is a 3 layer mask made of non-woven polyester and cotton. It’s as effective as the N95. Next on the list of masks that performed best were disposable surgical masks. These masks hugged the face well as well as being less porous than other masks.
